In the fall of 2007 Craig Reinheimer had the idea to host a couple of Junior tennis tournaments at the beginning of the High School tennis season as a way to promote tennis in the community, encourage more of the students to compete, and to bring other students in from other communities. The idea was for these tournaments to be a fundraising effort for the Cheltenham High School team. The first tournament was hosted at Cheltenham High School in March 2008, and for the first two years functioned as an extension of the High School Tennis team.
After the first tournament, Craig sought assistance with the next tournament and recruited a few parents from the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams and the Tournament Tennis Committee was formed.
Wanting to do more for the promotion of tennis in the Cheltenham community while continuing to support the High School teams, in 2010 The Friends of Cheltenham PE – Tennis Affiliates was formed as a 501(c)(3) organization and a subsidiary of The Friends of Cheltenham PhysEd. Our primary fund raising events are the tournaments that we host each year and all of the profits from these events are returned to the community through grants for clinics and other developmental programs to our resident youths.
The Friends of Cheltenham Community Tennis organization is comprised of a small but dedicated group of volunteer board members who are committed to raising awareness of, and promoting tennis within the Cheltenham community.
